Type I & III vs Type II collagen: the difference that matters
They share a name, but they are not interchangeable. Here is the plain-English difference between collagen peptides used as protein building blocks and undenatured Type II collagen studied for joint comfort.
One name, two jobs
“Collagen” is a family, not a single ingredient
Type I
The most abundant collagen in the body. It is prominent in skin, bone and tendons. Hydrolyzed bovine and marine collagen products are typically rich in Type I.
Type III
Often found alongside Type I in skin, muscles and blood vessels. Multi-collagen powders commonly combine sources that provide Types I and III.
Type II
The principal collagen type in cartilage. “Undenatured” Type II preserves its three-dimensional structure and is used at much smaller doses than collagen peptides.
The useful comparison
Hydrolyzed peptides and undenatured Type II are not dose equivalents
A 40 mg serving is not automatically weaker than a multi-gram serving. Dose only makes sense beside the ingredient’s form, mechanism and clinical research.

What the evidence says
Promising is not the same as proven for every person
A 2016 multicentre randomized trial reported better knee osteoarthritis symptom scores with 40 mg undenatured Type II collagen than placebo after 180 days. Later randomized studies have also reported improvements in selected pain, function or flexibility measures. The evidence base is still smaller than it looks at a glance, and several trials are industry connected.
An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found collagen supplementation may improve knee osteoarthritis pain and function. That literature includes different collagen preparations, doses and study designs, so it does not establish that one format universally wins.
Label check
Four things to look for before you buy
1. The exact form
“Type II” alone is not enough. Look for whether it is undenatured/native or hydrolyzed.
2. A disclosed amount
A proprietary blend makes it impossible to compare the product with the dose used in research.
3. A realistic time horizon
Most joint studies run for weeks or months, not days. Be wary of instant cartilage-repair promises.
4. The rest of the formula
